MacOS and EPSON Scan

How to scan on MacOS with an EPSON ET-4850

[top]

We bought a Mac Mini in June 2024 and on trying to scan to a pdf with an EPSON ET-4850 (which we have done with Linux) we found we could not. EPSON has no special app for that, and Epson suggests using Mac's Image Capture, but clicking on that standard Mac App gave us no way we could understand to access the scanner! Epson comments on their web site and web queries were no help whatever.

We do really like the printer, though.

So we figured out how to make it scan. It takes some non-obvious initial steps and after that scanning is easy. Read to the end of this page though, because it seems that going through these steps enables the Image Capture app to work for scanning with a simple click on the app itself!

Initial Steps

Put the first page of what you wish to scan on the scanner bed.

Click System Settings -> Printers and Scanners

Find ET-4850 in the printer list. Click on that item in the list.

An Image Capture panel opens up (it looks a bit different than simply clicking the app itself, fortunately).

Scanning First Page

Click the Overview button toward the bottom of the panel. This opens a new panel.

Update the Name field to be something meaningful.

Update the Format to be pdf (or some other option depending on your wishes).

If it is to be a multi-page document click Combine Into Single Document. If a single page document ensure the field is not checkmarked (click on it to switch on or off)..

Click SCAN to scan the page. It will produce output, but that is ok. If multi-page it will wind up as you intend eventually, keep reading here.

Scanning second, third etc pages

Put in the next page to be scanned. Click SCAN to scan the page. The output will be updated and now has one more page.

Repeat for each page in the document.

The Next Timep

Having gone through all of this it is quite likely that the computer remembers you have a scanner so simply clicking on the Image Capture app will bring up a page showing the scanner and ready to scan!

Finishing Up

Close/exit the Image Capture panels. Later scans will remember most of your settings here.
